Stud or Slag?

Although my last post described one particular camp follower who probably had some sort problem it does raise an interesting gender issue. Why is it that a bloke who sleeps around a lot is generally regarded as a 'stud' while a woman who does the same is 'loose' or a 'slag'?

Not necessarily. I regard promiscuous people of either gender with equal disdain, although I can't come up with an intellectual reason why sleeping around is wrong.

OOHH, that particular double standard bothers me to no end. I don't think either sex sleeping around (safely of course) is cause for name calling.

I think it stems from the notion that a woman has to be more careful, as she has more on the line owing to pregnancy. Now, obviously, in modern times this is altered by many factors: a woman can have an abortion, can use birth control, sue for paternity, etc., but it's a traditional holdover that I think stemmed from the physical reality that only women can get knocked up. Old habits are hard to break, so to speak. It bothers me, but it's so endemic that even I've been guilty of the double standard (not to say that I condone it either).

(Oh - this post kind of negates my last comment on previous post since you address the issue)
I'd say that the view is changing. I know a few men who will no longer hold that view... However, I believe they are being PC.

Would you want your mate to have 'had a go' at your wife? Or girlfriend? Or partner? Men are still more proprietary (sp?)about women.

Sleeping around is generally more acceptable today but I think it is a step in the wrong direction but then I have been accused of being 'old-fashioned' on this account.
